Greek Australian media personality Basil Zempilas was elected as the new mayor of the city of Perth on Saturday.

It was a tightly-fought race between the media personality and former journalist Di Bain, with the pair separated by just a few hundred votes.

With roots on the Greek island of Kastellorizo, Zempilas said during his victory speech: “Perth has given my family wonderful opportunity and it has given me a wonderful opportunity and it’s the same opportunity that Perth can provide all of its citizens.”

He campaigned on a range of policies, including a push for more police in the city center, more CCTV cameras, improved city lighting, reducing the level of homelessness and the reinstatement of funding for an Aboriginal outreach program.

Named “Kastellorizian of the Year” for 2018, he had reflected on the heritage of the islanders as traders in the Mediterranean.

“Our forebears had a worldly view as a result of travel and exposure to many cultures, which gave them both breadth and depth of knowledge and experience. This served them well in their future journeys to the antipodes as far as Australia, where they contributed to society, brought up their families, created opportunities and had successful lives,” he had said.

On September 6, 2009, Zempilas married his longtime girlfriend Amy Graham on Kastellorizo.
