His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia made his first pastoral visit to Perth, Western Australia, on the 11th to the 13th of July to celebrate with local clergy and the faithful of Perth on the feast day of Saint Paisios the Athonite.
His Eminence visited Perth in order to officiate at the first Divine Liturgy of the newly-constructed Saint Paisios church. This church is one of the few worldwide, and the first in Australia, to be dedicated to Saint Paisios the Athonite.
During his arrival at the airport on Thursday, Makarios was greeted by clergy, and a huge crowd of the faithful who awaited the arrival of his Eminence with great anticipation. Young children, along with their parents, greeted the new Archbishop warmly with joyous calls of “Axios” (“Worthy”).
The Byzantine Choir of Saint John of Damascus sang for the new Archbishop, and there was an official welcoming for Makarios at the Holy Monastery of Saint John later in the day.
The Doxology and a festal Vespers service followed in the presence of all the Orthodox clergy of Perth in the church of St. Paisios, which was built inside the grounds of the Holy Monastery of Saint John.
“I am very blessed to have you to be my brothers, to be my sisters, to be my children, to be my people… I would like to devote this Doxology to you,” His Eminence said in his remarks to the assembled faithful.
His Eminence visited all the three parishes in Perth on the 12th of July, and was formally welcomed each time by large crowds of the faithful joyfully exclaiming “Axios.“
The enthronement ceremony for His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia took place on June 29th, 2019 in a beautiful service in Sydney.
