New Archbishop of Australia Makarios’ Enthronement Set for June 29

The New Archbishop of Australia, His Eminence Makarios, will arrive at Kingsford Smith International Airport in Sydney at 6 PM on Tuesday, June 18.

The official enthronement of the new Australian Archbishop will take place at the Archdiocese Cathedral of the Annunciation of the Theotokos in Redfern at 11 AM on Saturday, June 29.

The Holy Synod unanimously voted for Bishop Makarios to lead the Greek Orthodox church of Australia on May 9 among a number of other candidates. He was viewed as the most suitable for the role after the untimely death of Australian Archbishop Stylianos.

Born in Heraklion, Crete, in 1973, his Eminence Makarios studied at the Higher Ecclesiastical School of Athens and the Theological School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.

Highly educated in a range of different subjects, Makarios has a Masters in Sacred Theology from the University of Boston, a Master of Arts in the History of Science from Harvard, and a Master of Bioethics from Monash University.
