Greek-Australian crowd in Melbourne shows its support for the tennis stars

Greek tennis stars Stefanos Tsitsipas and Maria Sakkari both chalked up wins in the first round the Australian Open in Melbourne on Monday, to the delight of their vocal fans.

Tsitsipas became the first Greek man to win at the Australian Open on Monday, rallying to beat Italian Matteo Berrettini 6-7(3), 6-4, 6-3, 7-6(4).

The 20 year old was eliminated from last year’s Australian Open in the first round, but this time he won, advancing after two hours and 57 minutes after hitting 15 aces and saving the two break points he faced.

Tsitsipas will next face Serbian qualifier Viktor Troicki or Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena.

Greece’s Maria Sakkari beat Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko in the women’s open match at the Australian Open 6-1, 3-6, 6-2.

Ranked 42nd in the world, Sakkari breezed her way through the first set, scoring 6-1, before losing the second set 3-6 to the 22nd-ranked Ostapenko and then taking the final set 6-2.

After the game, Sakkari thanked the Greek-Australian fans for their support.
