Greek Festival of Sydney Receives $75,000 Grant

Australian Minister for Multiculturalism Ray Williams and Mark Coure, M.P. representing Oatley, announced that a grant of $75,000 will be awarded for the 2019 Greek Festival of Sydney.

“The Greek Festival of Sydney is one of the longest-running cultural events in New South Wales,” Mr. Williams told the Greek Orthodox Community of New South Wales on Monday.

“The NSW Liberals & Nationals Government is delighted to support this outstanding
festival, which enriches our multicultural calendar and supports our thriving
multicultural and arts sector.

“New South Wales is home to more than 130,000 people of Greek ancestry, and more than 80,000 of those people speak Greek at home. This is a much-loved festival by the
Greek-Australian community,” Mr. Williams added.

Harry Danalis, President of the Greek Orthodox Community of New South Wales, said the Greekcommunity was very pleased to receive support from the NSW Government.

“The Greek Festival of Sydney is an internationally-renowned event which
showcases the best of Greek and Greek-Australian heritage and culture,”  Mr. Danalis
said.

“The Festival attracts interest from artists and performers from around the world and
is a much-anticipated event for the whole community.”

“Across our eight-week program commencing in March 2019, there will be something
for every member of the family to enjoy.”

The festival serves as the flagship Greek cultural event of the country and is an initiative of the Greek Orthodox Community of New South Wales, which has been in existence for 120 years. The 2019 event will be the 37th annual Greek Festival.

Acclaimed Greek composer/singer Giannis Haroulis was the highlight of the 2018 festival. In 2019, the headliner will be popular singer Eleonora Zouganeli in her first-ever appearance in Australia.

Greek Festival of Sydney Chair Nia Karteris said: “Eleonora Zouganeli is an exciting addition to our event and we’re anticipating audiences will be just as pleased with her inclusion as we are. We can’t wait to welcome her to Australia.”

MP Mark Coure said the Festival was a staple event for the local Greek community. “The Greek Festival of Sydney enriches our local community both socially and economically,” he stated.

“We are lucky to enjoy such a world-class event at our doorstep, with the Festival
leading the way as one of Australia’s top cultural festivals,” Mr. Coure added.
