A 3-month-old baby has succumb to injuries on Saturday, making the child the fifth dead victim of Dimitrious Gargasoulas, who drove his car into pedestrians in Melbourne’s Bourke Street Mall.

Police shot at the 26-year-old Greek-Australian man who deliberately tried to run over pedestrians and arrested him. He is under police guard in hospital, according to Australian media.

Four people were killed, a couple in their 30s and their 10-year-old daughter and a fourth person, who died later.

Police said more than 20 people were injured. At the time of writing, four of them are in critical condition.

According to ABC, Police Commissioner Graham Ashton spoke about the perpetrator’s background:

“There is an extensive family violence history involved. He has come to our attention on many occasions in the past. We have mental health and drug-related issues in the background of this particular person,” he said.

“He has been coming to our attention more recently over recent days in relation to assaults, and family violence-related assaults,” the commissioner added.
