A Seminar on Greek History and Culture is taking place at the Greek Centre in Melbourne on July 7.

The open seminar titled Iakovos Vasilikos, the Samian king of Moldovia, will focus on Greek native, Iakovos Vasilikos, who was the King of Moldavia and also the first officially Protestant monarch in Europe.

The lecturer will be conducted by Dean Kaliminiou, an active member of the Greek-Australian community and a well-known poet and short story writer in Melbourne as well as throughout Australia.

Samian-King-of-Moldovia-297x300Iakovos Vasilikos, the Samian King of Moldovia, is also referred to as John Jacob Heraclides, was largely cut off from Greece which was at that time under Ottoman rule.

He was known as a scholar, theologian, knight, diplomat and court intriguer.

The seminar reveals that Iakovos Vasilikos always kept true to his Greek roots and had created plans to liberate Greece that were never able to be implemented during his lifetime. However, 2.5 centuries following his death, Filiki Etaireia used many elements of the original plans by Iakovos Vasilikos during the Greek War for Independence.

The seminar will take place at the Greek Centre on July 7 at 7 p.m. and entrance is free. For more information see: http://www.greekcommunity.com.au/
