Greek Orthodox School Provides Company to Residents of Nursing Home

nursinghomeThe number of Australians aged over 65, is expected to grow rapidly in the next few decades. The expected rapid growth in Australia‘s population and consequent growth in the residential aged care sector is raising concerns on how to combat isolation and loneliness amongst residents.

Students from All Saints Grammar – a Greek Orthodox school in Sydney‘s South West, visit a local Greek nursing home on a regular basis.

All Saints Grammar and St. Basil’s Nursing Home, have had a relationship for many years, as students visit the Greek home to connect with residents. In addition, students offer volunteer services, such as cooking, making beds and assisting with meals.

“Opportunities like this allow the children to connect with the local community and to also understand their responsibility of giving back to their society and community at large”, says Elfa Lillis, head of the All Saints Grammar school.
