Two Greek-Australians in the Race for the Barton Seat in NSW

george-vellisLiberal MPs Nickolas Varvaris and George Vellis, will be attempting to claim the Barton seat in New South Wales in the next federal election. Vellis announced his intention to participate in the election with the Labor party a few days ago.

Vellis is well-known in the Greek community of NSW as the chairman of the Australian Hellenic Council. His decision to claim the Barton seat came at the same time that the Australian Electoral Commission announced its decision to make changes to the seat. It is estimated that through these changes the seat which currently falls in the Liberal party can potentially pass to the Labor party.

In his official statement, Vellis highlighted his actions and the help he has offered to the local community in the region. He added that his past career has given him the necessary experience and knowledge to face the issues raised by the residents of Barton.

In total five people have announced their candidacy for the Barton seat, while it is rumored that another Labor politician will be added to the list, former Minister Anthony Albanese.

Meanwhile, another Greek-Australian from Victoria, Theo Zographos, is expected to announce his candidacy for Dunkley’s seat in Victoria. Former Minister of Small Business, Bruce Billson has won that seat multiple times since 1996.
