Melbourne Stands with Greece: Solidarity Rally on July 4

rally-greeceOn Sunday, July 5, a referendum will be held in Greece where citizens are called upon to cast a “Yes” or “No” vote to a list of European and IMF bailout conditions.

During the week, the recent loan agreement with Europe expired and Greece defaulted on its IMF loan. This situation has led to bank closures and a lot of uncertainty within Greece.

While Greece’s membership in the European Union is not the focus of this referendum, there is a lot of speculation regarding what a “Yes” or “No” outcome could lead to.

The current situation, in addition to the hardship that the Greek people have endured due to strict austerity measures imposed over the last five years, has led to an outpouring of support toward the Greek people by Greeks in the diaspora across the globe.

As the third city with the largest Greek population in the world, Melbourne has decided to show its solidarity to the Greek people by holding a peaceful rally this Saturday, July 4.

The rally will be held between 1:00 pm-2:30 pm on the steps of the Victorian Parliament, where the people of Melbourne from all backgrounds will come together in unity to stand with Greece during this difficult time.

On this day, the focus will be to show the world that the people of Melbourne are standing by Greece’s side. Most importantly, this solidarity aims to show the Greek people that they are not alone at this critical juncture in Greece’s, Europe’s and essentially the world’s history.

Other similar rallies are being held on the same day in Brisbane, Sydney and Canberra.
