Annual Greek Community of Melbourne General Assembly

greek-community-assemblyThe annual Greek Community of Melbourne general assembly was held on Sunday, March 15 at the multipurpose room of Alphington Grammar School. The meeting included a discussion on the historic organizations’ future plans and activities.

The members mainly focused on the completion of construction works on the new Greek Community building and its commercial exploitation, as well as the operation of the Greek Center of Contemporary Culture and the Community’s educational programs.

Greek Community president Bill Papastergiadis stressed that the Community is entering a period of prosperity and regeneration with an optimistic view of the future. Furthermore, he noted that 80% of the new community building had already been leased, while the organization is currently negotiating for the leasing of any remaining space.

He also stressed that all the leases concerned Greek businesses, noting that the new community building will become a “vertical Greek village” in the center of Melbourne.

Meanwhile, he thanked all the Community’s benefactors for their generosity and support, while he particularly expressed his gratitude for the help of Greek Diaspora organizations.

Greek Community of Melbourne treasurer Dr. Marinis Pirpiris said that “we have to work hard as a community and a colony to implement our plans for the future, for the good of all of us,” noting that the Community is focusing on promoting Greek language, history and culture.

Dr. Pirpiris also stated that as a community “we must ensure the effective support towards young migrants from Greece” to help them adapt to their new society and also in order to attract more young people into the Community and the Greek Diaspora organizations.
