A Celebration of Melina Mercouri on International Women’s Day

Picture1 MelinaOn International Women’s Day, the 33rd Greek Festival of Sydney celebrates the life and political pursuits of a truly spectacular woman, Melina Mercouri. In a speech by Dr. Panayota Nazou, Mercouri’s political reincarnation will be explored and discussed.

Melina Mercouri’s influence was felt around the world as a political and cultural force.

The talk explores the changes Melina underwent in her development from international cinema star to a symbol of the persecuted artist, a symbol of the struggle for individual and national independence, and a visionary able to implement political and cultural programs nationally and internationally. Melina’s legacy remains the core of every cultural proposal formulated by the Greek state.

The talk will be presented by an equally remarkable woman, Dr. Panayota Nazou, who teaches Greek language, contemporary Greek literature and culture at the University of Sydney. Her research interests range from postmodernism and Greek metafiction to women’s writing in exile and Greek women in the diaspora.

The event will take place on Sunday March 8 (6 p.m.) at the Greek Community Club, 206-210 Lakemba Street, Lakemba. Admission is free and the talk will take place in the Greek language. For more information on the Festival, please visit www.greekfestivalofsydney.com.au
