Rally in Support of Greece at Sydney Town Hall

sydney-support-rally“The first aim of the AGSC is to let the Australian people know the truth about Greece. The second is to organize people to push the Australian government to support the Greek people,” said Adam Rorris, coordinator of the Australian-Greece Solidarity Campaign (AGSC). Furthermore, he added that people in Australia, especially Greek Diaspora members are going to dynamically support the Greek people in this critical time, during a rally organized outside Sydney Town Hall, on February 16, in order to support the Greek government in light of the negotiations to regulate the Greek public debt and put an end to austerity.

This was the first special event to be held in Australia and it is part of the “Let Greece Breathe” campaign, an AGSC initiative. Similar rallies are being organized in Melbourne and other Australian cities.

Former president of the Australian Education Union, Greek-Australian Angelo Gavrielatos noted during the event that “troika must respect democracy and the rights of the Greek people. Furthermore, other speakers such as the Greek Community of Sydney president Harry Danalis and Education Officer at the Consulate General of Greece in Sydney Maria Mouratidou called on all the relevant international organizations and countries currently negotiating with Greece to reach a fair agreement that will respect the democratic rights of Greek people.

The “Let Greece Breathe” campaign recognizes the democratic will of the Greek people who have elected to reject the politics of punishment. Furthermore, the campaign’s pledge states that “we do not recognize the claim of any external government or bank or other authority to persist in imposing their policies onto the Greek people – let alone policies that have brought such misery. For this country, and the Greek people, we say enough is enough. We pledge to stand with the Greek people and support their struggle for hope, dignity and justice.”
