Fundraiser to Help Greek-Australian Wife of Man Killed by Lightning

Lightning over the Dorset coast in the UKFriends and relatives contributed to a fundraiser to assist Greek Australian Mary Mourgelas whose husband was killed by a bolt of lightning in Worongary.

The 39-year-old Kane Bennett was killed trying to protect his wife and two children from an electrical storm.

The Gold Coast family — Bennett, Mary, 22-month-old son Max and 12-week-old daughter Bella — were in Queensland to vote and took shelter in a gazebo after the storm broke. Bennett took the blow to protect his young children and partner.

A fundraising page was started to support the grieving family and raised 26,000 dollars overnight. The page said that “Kane’s final act was to ensure that he took the full force of the lightning storm so that his family was safe.”

“This page is to raise funds to support Mary, Max and Bella as they grieve the loss of a wonderful husband and Dad.”

The initial goal was to raise 10,000 dollars, yet the total amount rose to 26,000 in less than 24 hours.
