Greek-Australian Epiphany Celebrations

epiphany-australiaThe Australian summer weather gave thousands of devoted Greek Orthodox Australians the opportunity to attend the Epiphany celebrations in various coastal areas of the country.

In Frankston, the Greek Orthodox community commemorated the day with a holy service in the new Holy Epiphany Church, the first and only in Australia dedicated to Theofaneia.

More than 5,000 Greek-Australians gathered in Red Hill to attend the holy service and then move to Rye beach, where a girl made history, after she dived along with 20 young men. Emily Paxevanou is the first woman in Australia to jump in the water for the cross.

Each Greek Orthodox Community in Australia had organized a special event for the day, where people had the chance to enjoy Greek music, food, sweets and drinks.

The celebrations in Melbourne, Victoria, have been scheduled to take place this Sunday, January 11. All the parishes of Melbourne will gather and celebrate the Epiphany together. Then they will visit Princes Pier in the port of Melbourne, the arrival area of the first Greek migrant ships, where the young men will dive for the cross.
