Students who excelled in learning Greek in the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) examinations were awarded by the Greek Community of Melbourne during the established annual celebration of Christmas, which took place this year at the beautiful new community building with the participation of over 350 people.

Greek Community of Melbourne President Vassilis Papastergiadis congratulated the students and thanked the schools’ teaching staff for their contribution, as well as all those who support and stand by the community.

Greek Consulate of Melbourne Education Officer Vassilis Gokas, who was also present at the ceremony, congratulated the students and the community for its initiative to reward them. A special award was given to a non-Greek origin student who excelled in the course of Ancient Greek. His name is Marc Donato and is a student of the Xavier College.

Furthermore, students of the Greek Community of Melbourne school, for children whose native language is Greek or have an advanced knowledge of the Greek language, visited aged care center “Fronditha” where they met with elderly expatriates, discussed with them and sang carols in a touching atmosphere.

“The visit to the aged care center was an opportunity for the children to understand a traditional Greek custom and, at the same time, give joy to people who need it during the holy days of Christmas,” said the Greek Community of Melbourne school coordinator, Maria Bakalidou.
