Greek-Australian Woman Receives Birthday Card from Queen Elizabeth

queen elizabethQueen Elizabeth of England has recently sent a birthday card to Eleni Stamelou, member of the Greek Diaspora in Perth, Australia, in order to commemorate the latter’s 108th birthday.

Stamelou was born in Euboea, Greece, in 1906, and currently lives in Perth with her daughter Maria. She has four children, 12 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren.

According to the Stamelou, who used to work as a seamstress, the secret for longevity is to “enjoy the gift of life.”

Stamelou appears to be the oldest Greek Diaspora member in Western Australia and possibly in the entire country. The oldest Greek-Australian died last year at the age of 110. Her name was Katerina Kilikidou and she originated from Pontos. Kilikidou’s mother had also died at the age of 110.

Queen Elizabeth sends congratulatory messages to mark various occasions, such as 100th birthdays or diamond wedding anniversaries. The Queen’s congratulatory messages consist of a card containing a personalized message.
