Greek-Australians Battle in Oakleigh Elections

greece-australia-600x280The state seat elections of Oakleigh in Victoria, scheduled to take place on Saturday, November 29, have turned into a Greek battle.

The district of Oakleigh in Melbourne is home to thousands of Greek-Australians who care about the community and want to make a change. It is almost certain that the seat will pass on to Greek hands, since the candidates of the two largest and most popular parties are members of the Greek Diaspora.

Steve Dimopoulos is a candidate for the state seat with the Labor Party, Theo Zographos is a candidate with the Liberal Party, while Parashos Kioupelis is an independent candidate.

Dimopoulos grew up in Oakleigh and studied in local state schools, as well as Monash University. He has worked in the community and government for over 20 years and has represented the area as a Councillor at the City of Monash for 11 years.

Zographos has lived in the Oakleigh area his whole life. He attended Oakleigh Grammar School and served as College Captain, before pursuing a career in the Victorian Public Service where he currently works. In 2010, he was the local Liberal candidate for Oakleigh.

Kioupelis has lived the Oakleigh area for 26 years. Before getting involved with politics, he used to work in mechanical plumbing, air conditioning and building.
