Greek-Australian businessmen and members of the Greek community Steven and Harry Tsalikidis and Athanasios Salahas donated several hundred thousand dollars to the new Greek Cultural Centre in Melbourne, according to evrytanika.gr. The Cultural Centre was inaugurated in September.
“As a family, we are proud of being Greek and we help the community and other diaspora organizations any way we can,” Steven Tsalikidis said. “We are happy about the activities and all the work done by the community and we are proud of it. We wish for the community and the diaspora organizations to keep up the great work.”
On his part, Athanasios Salahas said, “I have always supported the community and I will keep doing so. I always believed that the Greek community can thrive and, in some aspects, it has. It is democratic, united and we do things that our children will inherit.”
Salahas also said that there were many members of the Greek community in the past who doubted that the Cultural Center would be constructed and now that they have seen it become a reality, they have changed their minds.
President of the Greek-Australian community Vasilis Papastergiadis thanked the businessmen for their donations and continuous support.
“We are all touched and this gesture has encouraged us to continue our work,” Papastergiadis said. “We sincerely thank them for their donations and we hope that others will follow their example because there is still a lot that needs to be done for the Cultural Centre, which is a legacy for generations to come.”
