The Greeks and Australian Football

footballWith a stunning performance, Hawthorn (“Hawks”) beat Sydney (“Swans”) by an impressive 137-74 on Saturday, snatching the twelfth title in the club’s history.

While the Australian Football League (AFL) is worshipped all throughout Australia, it has a particularly strong following in Melbourne. Here, like nowhere else, the sport has an enormous political, economic and cultural influence on Australian life.

Greek Australians love football. In fact, their relationship with Australian football is over a century old. This year’s head of the Australian Football League is Greek Andrew Demetriou. One of the best players of the year was also Greek – David Zaharakis, who plays for Essendon.

Some of the best players in the AFL’s history – Anthony Koutoufides, Ang Christou – were of Greek origin. Lou Richards, a living legend and leader of the most popular team in Australia, Collinwood, is also Greek by origin.

Lou Richards, now 91 years old, was born in Collinwood in 1923 and played with the team for 15 seasons. After his retirement from football, he embarked on a media career that lasted more than five decades. He worked as a sports journalist for the Sun News Pictorial, World of Sport and the Footy Show. He stood out both as a football player and later as a sports commentator, thanks to his devotion to his team and his great sense of humor.
