Greek to Become First Female Football Referee

glouftsi
Greek-Australian Helen Glouftsi makes history as it is almost certain that she will become the first female referee in Australian football, a sport that is worshiped as a religion and played mainly by men.

Saturday was the championship final in Melbourne, which was attended by more than 100,000 spectators while millions watched the Hawthorn vs Sydney match on TV. Hawthorn won the game and the title.

21-year-old Glouftsi is from Adelaide and has already been the referee on state level games, while at the same time she is a student at the University of South Australia.

Glouftsi has won a scholarship from the Pan-Australian Football League Association, and according to local media, the young Greek-Australian will certainly become the first female referee, soon to be seen in games of the Australian Football League (AFL).
