Greek Teen Will Represent Australia in the UN

Maria Skalisti18-year old Maria Skalisti has been chosen to represent Australia, her country of birth, in the upcoming 47th International Youth Congress in the Hague.

The Congress will see more than 4,000 delegates from 90 countries discussing various international issues. Their proposals will then be sent to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon.

The high school student has always been a passionate advocate of human rights. While she plans to attend this year’s Congress, it won’t be easy; her grandparents, with whom she lives, are currently unable to afford her airfare.

In her spare time, Maris works in a supermarket, hoping to collect enough money to fly to the Hague. She has published an appeal for help on the online Greek newspaper Neos Kosmos, and she is also asking the Greek community of Australia to help her achieve her goal.

After she completes her studies at Monash University, Skalisti plans to work as a human rights lawyer or in the diplomatic service.
