Two Men Arrested for Greek Orthodox Church Burglary

Burglary at Greek Orthodox Church

Detectives from the Rosebud Crime Investigation Unit have arrested two men in relation to a burglary at a Greek Orthodox Church in Red Hill in July.

The men were arrested following a number of warrants conducted this morning and charged with burglary and theft.

Its alleged a glass box which contained an icon of the Virgin Mary was smashed and gold jewelry inside worth $100.000 was stolen.

Church secretary Georgie Marinis said the jewellery had been left as gifts to the Virgin Mary.

“In our religion, what we do is we make a promise to the saint, or Our Lady in our case, and if the problem or the issues comes good, then we give her a present in thank you,” she said.

A 34-year-old Coldstream man and a 29-year-old Warburton man will appear in Frankston Magistrates’ Court at a later date, police announced.
