“Greek Day Out” Festival in Sydney

Greek day outA festival with Greek dances, theatre and live music was held on August 24 at a Woollahra Municipal Council venue, exciting thousands of visitors.

The cultural festival “Greek Day Out” was organized by the Woollahra Council and the Consulate General in Sydney to celebrate and highlight the Greek culture and its contribution to the development of modern Australian culture.

The festival’s events included traditional Greek dances, theatrical performance with extracts from the tragedy “Oedipus the King”, live music and songs by Greek bands, a photography exhibition on the historical links between Greece and Australia, memorabilia from the participation of Australian Anzac soldiers in the First and Second World War and their presence in Lemnos and the Battle of Crete.

The festival also included a variety of educational and entertaining activities for children, such as reading tales in Greek and English, painting and a Karagiozis shadow theater show. An exhibition of Greek coins and notes was very successful.

Events and exhibitions were accompanied with pictures and films of the Greek National Tourism Organization (EOT) campaign and Greek dishes. The guest speaker, Emmanuel Alfieris, from the Commonwealth Bank gave a lecture on the economic lessons Australia can learn from Greece and vice versa.
