Brisbane: Anti-Fascists Confront GD Rally Near Greek Consul

golden dawn brisbaneThe Australia First Party organized a rally in solidarity with Greece’s neo-Nazi party Golden Dawn, but the dozen or so supporters gathered outside Brisbane’s Greek Club were met outside the Consul General of Greece by 200 unionists and supporters of the anti-fascist movement Antifa shouting “Immigrants are welcome, Nazis are not!”

Police kept the two groups apart to maintain order.

Golden Dawn is a neo-nazi Greek political party that has gained considerable voter support during the Greek financial crisis. It was founded by Nikos Michaloliakos, who has publicly denied that Holocaust of WWII.

In late 2013, Michaloliakos was arrested along with several other Golden Dawn members after the September murder of Greek anti-fascist rapper Pavlos Fyssas.

“We shall call on the Greek government to release from jail the illegally imprisoned Golden Dawn Members of Parliament,” wrote the Australia First Party on its website. “This action is about nationalists supporting nationalists, about patriots helping patriots.”

After the confrontation, Australia First Party members fled the scene, while the opposite group cheered. The political party focuses on “ending government-funded and institutionalized policy of multiculturalism and aims to “strengthen and protect the traditional family.”

“Racism should be rejected outright at every opportunity,” said Queensland Multicultural Affairs Minister Glen Elmes on Thursday. “I condemn the views of the misguided Golden Dawn organisation, and call on all Queenslanders to do likewise.”
