Fund Raiser for Melbourne’s Greek Cultural Center a Success

greek communityA fundraising event that took place on April 29 in the premises of the Cultural Center of the Greek Community of Melbourne yielded the impressive amount of 850,000 dollars.

About 130 eminent Greek-Australians attended the event and offered large amounts of money for the support of the Greek Cultural Centre. The Greek businessman Spyros Alysandratos offered 100,000 dollars while Andrew Andrianopoulos, Michael Argyrou and Marinis Pipriris donated more that 50,000 dollars each.

Greek lawyer Olivia Nikou and the professor at the university of Melbourne, Nikos Papastergiadis, both members of the Greek Community’s cultural committee, talked about the action of the Greek Cultural Center.

Vasilis Papastergiadis, president of the Greek Community of Melbourne, stated that the Center will be the biggest of the Greek diaspora and that it will host the leading Greek scientists and artists from around the world. He also pointed out that the activities of the Greek Cultural Center will not be limited in Melbourne and Australia but will expand throughout the world.

The 15-storey building of the Greek cultural center will cost around 15 million dollars. Two million dollars came from federal government funding and two million from the state government of Victoria. The sale of property owned by Melbourne’s Greek Community yielded 5 million dollars while donations brought in 2 million dollars.
