Greek-Australian Couple Donates $1.5 Mln to Charity

Nikos-VournazosA famous Greek couple donated 1.5 million dollars to a Greek-Australian charitable organization named Fronditha Care. Fronditha Care – formerly called the Australian Greek Society for Care of the Elderly – was founded in 1976 and is a charitable organization providing services to Greek-Australian elderly.

This is the biggest donation in the organization’s history. The money that Nikos and Maria Vournazos offered to the organization will serve a special purpose. The organization will be able to establish a new sector in its new nursing home facilities in Clayton, for people who suffer from Multiple Sclerosis (MS).

Fronditha Care’s president, Sakis Zafeiropoulos said that “this donation is a unique act of generosity” by Mr. Vournazos.

Born in 1924, in a small village of Achaia during the Nazi occupation in Greece, Mr. Nikos Vournazos joined the National Resistance (EAM –ELAS). In 1955, he migrated to Australia and became an active member of the Greek-Australian community since 1965.

Vournazos turns 90-years-old in just a few weeks.  Impressively, he earned a literature degree at the age of 78 and has written several books since then.

In 1987, Nikos Vournazos was honored with the National Resistance medal 1941-1945 as an active resistant member of ELAS. In 1995, he decided to join the New England University and 7 years later, at the age of 78, he graduated. In his first book published in 2003, he wrote about personal life experiences that affected him most. Last but not least, he has written a total of 6 books until now.
