Australia day is celebrated by all Australians wherever they are. On this national day, all Australians honor their country’s values that unite them as nation.
However, the majority of the indigenous Australians, also known as Aborigines, do not participate in the feast as they consider Australia day as a “Day of Grief.” The way they see it, it was a day like this that the first British colonists arrived in Australia.
Indigenous campaigner and Sydney Swans AFL star Adam Goodes has been named the 2014 Australian of the Year. Adam Goodes also is the main figure of the anti-racism campaign of Australia.
He acknowledged that all Australians, even if they come from different places and civilizations, have something in common.
“We are proud that we have built an equal, fair and deeply democratic society as well as one of the strongest economies of the world” he said.
During Australia day, the tradition dictates that all those who have proven themselves should be rewarded with honors.
Among those who were honored this year were also some Greeks of the diaspora such as Andrew Liveris, Aggelos- Lambrinos Notaras and Stefanos Manos from Melbourne.
Andrew Liveris is one of the most powerful figures of the Greek community in Australia. Born in Darwin, Australia, to two Greek immigrants from Kastellorizo, Andrew N. Liveris currently serves as President, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The Dow Chemical Company. During his tenure as CEO, Mr. Liveris guided the $60 billion company through the widespread economic crisis in addition to creating unprecedented periods of progress and expansion. He is also one of the co-founders of the Hellenic Initiative.
