Imitation Greek Feta Found in Australia and Israel

fetaAccording to a survey carried out in Australia, customers are finding it difficult to determine the real origin of feta cheese products which have flooded the market.

A report issued by the Secretary ISD Sydney, Vaianos Oreopoulos Kelenis, says “All of these products clearly distort the image of the feta that are prepared with either cow’s milk or goat’s milk. The lucky thing is that the ingredients are listed on the package. In that case, only consumers with knowledge in the area have the ability to make the right choice.”

Additionally, consumers prefer the imitation of PDO cheeses of authentic Greek feta in Israel.

Despina Daoutakou, ISD Director of the Embassy of Greece in Israel, said in a report, “In the market, there is the available white cheese —  “Bulgarian” — by the company Gad, while the company Tnuva dispenses white cheese called “Feta Cheese,” from cow, goat or sheep’s milk,” adding that, “Since Israel is a third country not applicable to EU legislation on the protection of designations of origin and protected geographical indications. In addition to the Agricultural Agreement and the EU- Israel, which came into effect from January 1, 2010, the parties agreed to return at an appropriate time in order to discuss a possible agreement on the protection of geographical indications for external products (Joint Declaration on geographical indications). Therefore, the protection of Greek PDO Israeli market can currently only be achieved by a bilateral agreement.”
