The Greek-Australian football club Sydney Olympic is attempting to sign three of Greece’s most famous footballers, and Euro 2004 winners, Angelos Charisteas, Sotirios Kyrgiakos and Pantelis Kafes. The club is hoping that the players will be able to take part in four games each, in various stages of the 2014 National Premier League.

Sotirios Kyrgiakos who was center-back for Liverpool and has also played for Panathinaikos as well as Rangers, was the first to agree to the deal and is expected to arrive in Australia in late January to sign the contract. The Sydney Olympic Vice-President, Graham Athanaseris said, “We’ve had negotiations for the past 2½ weeks and it looks like all three will come at different stages of the season.”

The central midfielder, Pantelis Kafes is currently out of contract, since leaving Greek club Veria last February. He has agreed to play for Sydney Olympic in 2014. However, he has since received a number of new offers and may therfore decide to remain in Europe.

Finally, Angelos Charisteas who has previously played for Ajax, Werder Bremen and Schalke is also out of contract after leaving Saudi-Arabian club Al-Nassr. Charisteas has also agreed to play for Sydney Olympic, but there is speculation that he may receive offers from European clubs in January.

The three Greek players are all interested in a career in the Australian A-League and view their collaboration with Sydney Olympic as an opportunity to attract more offers.
