Greek-Australian Accused of Stealing 500 Million Dollars

fraudThe 44 year-old Greek-Australian, Vasilis Vlachos, is involved in a case that has shocked the country. He is accused of stealing 500 million dollars. According to police estimates, his victims number well over a thousand, among them many policemen.

Vlachos had created a club in which he bet on the outcome of horse races. He claimed to have thoroughly studied each race and that he was acting on behalf of his clients. However as it turned out, many people who had trusted him lost their money.

Last week Vlachos appeared before the court in Sydney to explain the “disappearance” of 194 million dollars from the joint bank account he held with his friend Daniel Maxwell, who now lives in Dubai. Vlachos was unable to provide a satisfactory explanation, claiming, “Last Wednesday, I checked the account online as usual, and there wasn’t any problem. Some time later I was informed that the money had disappeared. I was in shock. In the account was money of the club members and also mine,” he added.

As reported, some club members, among them famous Australian businessmen, athletes and artists, lost up to a million dollars each. The case is now being investigated by police and judicial authorities.

Vlachos is also accused of transferring 27.5 million dollars to a company named Aloga, in Bermuda. He has a company of the same name in Australia.

The authorities have “frozen” his assets, amounting to 29 million dollars and have forbidden him to leave the country.
