Sinodinos in the Outer Ministry

SinodinosAccording to the Australian Financial Review, NSW senator Arthur Sinodinos, who ran John Howard’s office when he was prime minister, is not to be appointed to cabinet, but will be given a portfolio in the Outer Ministry.

Shadow assistant treasurer Mathias Cormann is to enter cabinet and become finance minister. Senior Coalition sources said there had been “question marks” raised internally over the last week whether Sinodinos may have to appear before a corruption inquiry related to a directorship he once held.

According to the newspaper, Sinodinos, a renowned figure inside the Coalition and former National Australia Bank executive, maintains he has done nothing wrong and his colleagues support him.

Sinodinos is an acknowledged political and policy brain who, as Howard’s chief of staff, was instrumental to the Howard government’s success. He was lured away from a lucrative private career to enter the Senate in 2011.

On September 16, Abbott announced his Cabinet and outer ministry team in Canberra, nine days after the coalition’s election win over Labor.  His new opposition frontbench will be in place before Parliament resumes, or around October 29.
