Australians in Greece Don’t Vote

australiaAustralian citizens in Greece- including those of Greek descent- don’t seem to be particularly interested in the national elections which will be held in Australia on September 7.

It is estimated that at this time, thousands of expatriates who are naturalized Australians and have the right to vote in Australia, are still in Greece for their summer vacation.

There are tens of thousands of expatriates who are naturalized citizens in Australia and have been repatriated. Those among them, who have been in Greece for up to six years and are registered on the electoral rolls, have the right to vote. But those who go to the Australian Embassy to exercise their right to vote are very few, only some hundred out of the tens of thousands.

According to the statements that some expatriates made in the English version of the newspaper Neos Kosmos, some do not vote because they are not interested and some others because they believe that they live far from Australia and their vote should not influence the result and the life of the Australians.

According to the same reportage, there are expatriates who vote and believe that Australia should show a special interest, especially regarding the social welfare of the Australians who live abroad. For example of expatriates, Australian citizens, who have been repatriated in Greece and are receiving an Australian pension.
