His Ex-Wife Won $6 Million

lotto-australiaA Greek woman living in Sydney, won six million dollars in the Lotto six months after her divorce with her husband of twenty years. The 62-year-old husband instituted legal proceedings demanding half the sum.

The husband maintained that even though the couple was divorced the time when the lucky coupon was bought, half the amount belongs to him because the coupon was bought with money coming from their “common fund.” The lawyers he hired supported in court that the husband by allowing his wife to play Lotto all the years they were married, using their common money, raised her chances of winning.

The identities of the two involved parts are not to be disclosed due to legal reasons. However, as it became known in court, the super-lucky woman was buying Lotto coupons since the beginning of the 80’s and would spend 25 to 30 euros per week for this reason. When the couple divorced in 2008, the woman was upset about how she would make ends meet financially. Indeed, her sister helped her by giving her 50 euros every week. The father of the two sisters would also buy  Lotto coupons and name them “Tichi,” luck in Greek. That is what one of the sisters called her coupon and used to give it to the other sister to submit every week. In addition, she would give her money to play the Lotto.

Until the day she won. Six million dollars. She kept the five for herself and gave one million to her sister that supported her. As for the husband, the court decided that he is not to take a single cent because at the time when the lucky coupon was purchased the couple was already divorced and the wife was not playing Lotto with the husband’s money. The court, however, when distributing the assets of the couple decided that the wife should give 500,000 dollars more to the husband as “there is a huge difference in the budgets of the two parties and the possibilities of the husband to work are limited.”
