Greek Lawmakers’ Seats Look Safe

thompsonThe Greek presence in the Australian Parliament is expected to remain strong after the national elections of Sept. 24. According to the polls, three Greek MPs (Stathis Georganas, Maria Vamvakinou and Sophie Panopoulou-Mirabela) are expected to be re-elected.

The re-election of Thanassis Synodinos and Nikos Xenophontas in the Senate is almost certain. However, the possobillity of more Greek candidates in the Parliament is not clear yet.

Meanwhile, a day after the Prime Minister announced the date of the elections, the main subject of discussion on the Australian media was the scandal in which the former MP of the Labor Party and current Independent MP, Craig Thomson is involved. He was was arrested by police and charged in a series of alleged fraudulent activities.

Thomson is facing at least 149 charges relating to his time at the Health Services Union. New South Wales Police carried out the arrest warrant on the request of the Victoria Police. Thomson was granted bail and is required to appear before the Melbourne Magistrates Court later this month. He denied the allegations, and said that he would be “vigorously defending these charges.”
