Fake Greek Feta In Australia’s Market

FetaSome cheese products in Australia have been found to be claiming to be Greek feta, although Greek embassy officials said it they are not. They released a document warning consumers to be careful about what they are buying.

“The products presented as Feta, are mainly domestically produced and imported from the Middle East (UAE) and Northern Europe (Denmark). All these products, that clearly distort the consumer country’s image of feta, are either made from cow’s or goat’s milk. The good news is that the ingredients actually appear on the package. However, in this case it is expected that only those consumers aware of the Greek product could buy the correct product,” the warning stated.

The embassy said that, “Given that our country has registered, within the EU, the PDO / PGI product name, our national effort should  deal with this issue maybe in a more marketing attitude and suggest a new legal data by securing the designation ‘The Authentic Greek Feta,’ or another similar designation that is to perfectly and automatically display the particular characteristics of the identity of Greek products in comparison to all others…”

It’s not uncommon, including in the United States, for domestic companies to product a Greek-style feta and claim it is of Greek origin in a bid tio lure customers.
