Greek Language Promoted in Australian Schools

greek languageModern Greek is one of the top five languages other than English spoken in Australia, with more than 250,000 Australians stating in the 2006 Census that they spoke Greek at home.

Greek is one of the eleven languages which are included in the Australian National Curriculum by mid 2011.

The relevant committee (ACARA) included Greek in “national priority” languages, characterized as “Heritage Language” and not as “Ethnic Language”.

After the decision the Greek language to be included in the twelve-language group which are going to be taught in Australian schools from primary to high school, the Greek educational world of Australia started a promoting campaign to convince all children in Australia, both Greeks and Australians, to choose the Modern Greek course between the other elective courses.

Discussions on the National Curriculum started two years ago, targeting the inclusion of foreign languages in Australian schools.
