Migrant James Arvanitakis has been proclaimed lecturer of the year in Australia. The award given to him was accompanied by a $50,000 cash prize, sponsored by the Australian Prime Minister’s office.
Arvanitakis is a senior lecturer in the Humanities at the University of Western Sydney and is a member of the University’s Institute for Cultural and Society. He won because, according to the judges,he adopted new teaching methods so as to better approach and magnetize the students.
The jury said it also believed that he has a unique ability to give life to theories, to make teaching enjoyable and show his students that what they learn is much more relevant to their daily lives. Arvanitakis, who teaches sociology, has been invited to take part in teachings symposiums in Europe, South Africa and Canada as well.
