Channel Ten Sacks Greek Newsreader Helen Kapalos

Channel Ten newsreader Greek Helen Kapalos has been sacked by the network in a staff cuts plan that aims to battle the massive slupm in ratings. Kapalos had become popular as the news presenterer over the past six years, but the network decided not to renew her contract for the following year. Now her co-presenter Mal Walden will continue the Ten News at Five program as a solo newsreader.

Network Ten spokeswoman said that the details of why Kapalos contract has not been renewed will not be discussed publicly. After the Friday news of her being fired, Kapalos first declined to make any comments on the unexpected news and only wrote on her Twitter account “Fall down seven times, get up eight” announcing her departure from the Channel and on to the US for her planned vacation.

Having taken over from Jennifer Hansen as presenter of Ten News at Five with Mal Walden, the Greek-Australian newsreader told radio show Nightline (3AW693 News Talk) that she is planning to get her own website going in order to stay in touch with the people and become more interactive with them.

“It’s not a monetary thing or anything like that, it’s just a chance for me to talk about things that happen on the news at length and things that happen in every day life,” she told Nightline. According to Kapalos interview on the radio show, she had asked for a more creative expression of her work just one week before getting fired. Australian blogs and newspapers are questioning the Channel’s decision to sack one of the most likeable and high-profile TV personas in an attempt to cut on the expenses.
