Australia Says Deal Near for Student Visits

Australia’s Minister for Immigration and Citizenship Chris Bowen has reiterated that he believes  an intergovernmental agreement between Australia and Greece allowing tourists to work during their vacations will be concluded.

He invited Greek students to come to Australia and said once the deal is done that some 500 young Australians and Greeks from 18-30 will be allowed long-term holidays in each other’s country while also being allowed to work while there. He said, however, the number will not exceed that and remain low.

Bowen’s office has been criticized for deporting some Greeks who come to Australia to visit if they can’t prove they have enough funds to last during their stay and if they are suspected of really wanting to come there to find work and escape Greece’s crushing economic crisis.
