Australian Ministry Admits Some Greek Tourists Deported

The Australian Ministry of Immigration and Citizenship confirmed recent reports that some Greek tourists who visited Australia were held in detention centers or deported under the suspicion they might try to stay in the country longer than their visa lasts.

The Australian newspaper Neos Kosmos wrote that during 2011-2012, 29 Greek citizens were not allowed to leave the Melbourne airport and enter the country. Australia has applied a strict policy concerning immigration and tourist visits to the country. Upon their arrival in Australia, tourists have to convince authorities they have enough money to spend till their visa expires as well as to show their return tickets.

When Australian authorities find tourists they believe do not have enough money or accommodations, and say they want to find a job, they are sent back to Greece on the first flight available and are held in detention centers until then, a policy that applies not just to Greeks but anyone who doesn’t meet the criteria.
