Many Greek-Australian Candidates Running for Office

As Australians ready to vote in the Sept. 8 New South Wales local government elections, they will find a number of Greek-Australians on the ballot, who have plastered posters all around neighborhoods dominated by their countrymen, the newspaper Neos Kosmos reported.

A Greek cafeteria owner who has built a strong reputation in Sydney’s business world, Angela Vithoulkas, wants to dethrone Clover Moore at Town Hall and is running with her own party, the Living Sydney Independent Team. Kon, Pantelis and Poppy Trebelas are running in different constituencies for the No Parking Meters Party.

The elections have a strong Greek color with candidates in every ward including the Canada Bay City Mayor, Labor’s Angelo Tsirekas, who is seeking a second term; Mayor Nikos Varvaris (Liberal) and Councillor Nikitas Katris (Labor) in Kogarah; Councilors Emmanuel Tsardoulias (Labor) and Marika Kontellis (Greens) in Marrickville; Councillor Peter Poulos (Liberal), Andrew Tsounis (Labor), Petro Kalligas (Liberal), Kyriakos Koliadis (Independent) in Rockdale; former SBS Radio Director, Paul Masselos (Labor), in Waverley; Esta Paschalidis-Chilas and Sam Pambris in Canterbury, both Labor; Councillor Julie Passas (Liberal) in Ashfield; Former mayor and councillor John Procopiades (Independet) and Anthony Andrews (Independent), in Randwick, and Labor Councillors George Glinatsis and Stan Kondilios in Botany Bay.
