2012 Antipodean Palette Art Exhibition by the Greek Australian Cultural League

The 2012 Antipodean Palette Art Exhibition kicks off once again next Thursday night, reports Neos Kosmos. The exhibition – organized by the Greek Australian Cultural League – aims at displaying Greek-Australian talent in the arts, through images and paintings.

Over 65 pieces will be exhibited and the artwork contains landscapes, portraits, collages and photographs highlighting the creativity of the community.

“The arts needs to be promoted in the Greek community as the last 20 years, there’s been little activity in the visual arts area,” says Frixos Ioannides, coordinator of the exhibition, Greek Australian Cultural League.

This exhibition is the second of its kind for the cultural league, and one that he hopes will continue each and every year.

“We had [an exhibition] last year and it was a success,” Frixos told Neos Kosmos, “a lot of people commented positively about the idea of a group exhibition and we decided to run it again.”

The Greek Australian Cultural League helps promote cultural events for people of Greek background and aims at including young artists who, in some cases, are showcasing their first works.

The exhibition will feature a poetry reading organized by Dimitris Troaditis, and a CD launch of Sappho, Kavafy by Christella Demetriou on July 28. All of the events are admission-free.

“If there was a theme for this exhibition it would be diversity – people show what they do,” says Frixos.

The 2012 Antipodean Palette Art Exhibition opens on Thursday 19 July, at Steps Gallery, 62 Lygon Street, Carlton. For more information visit www.gacl.com.au or email gaclmelbourne@wordpress.com
