Commemorative Events for the Battle of Crete in Victoria

Greek-Australians have already started honoring the Battle of Crete, as a photo exhibition has been inaugurated in Victoria following the initiative of the Australia-Greece Parliamentary Friendship Committee.

The exhibition is taking place in Queens hall in Victoria, and presents rare historical photographic material and various Cretan relics.

The Governor-General of Australia Quentin Bryce described the Battle of Crete as being of “significant importance” for the outcome of the World War II, in a statement she made on the events.

Ceremonies will be honored with the presence of a Greek Special Forces delegation. A series of ceremonies will take place during the week, with an event being held Sunday to include a Divine Liturgy in the Holy Archbishop Church of Saint Efstathios and a wreath deposit at the Unknown Soldier Monument. Every religious, diplomatic and political authority of the Greek community will participate in the commemorations.

Greek schools and community organizations will take part in the events alongside Greek and Australian Veterans of the Battle of Crete.
