Famous Rebetika Violinist Hector Cosmas Passes Away

Famous Greek-Australian violinist of the Rembetiko music genre, Hector Kosmas, passed away suddenly at the age of 44 last Thursday afternoon. The talented artist from Melbourne was playing squash when he suffered a fatal heart attack.

Cosmas was born and raised in Melbourne and had a true love for Greek traditional music from an early age. In 1989, Cosmas joined “Apodimi Compania”, a music group of second and third generation Greeks in Australia, including the brothers George and Manolis Galiatsos, and Argiris Argiropoulos. The band reshaped the cultural events of the Greek Community in Melbourne, bringing the younger Greek-Australians closer to the rebetika and demotika music traditions of their homeland.

The funeral service for Cosmas will be held in Greece.
