Australia Honors Cretan Students

On the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Crete (1941-2011), the Returned and Services League has awarded four scholarships to outstanding Cretan students to assist them in their further studies but also to help the country’s new generation consolidate the message of peace and solidarity.

The Australian Returned and Services League, which supports veterans of all wars, has honored that bond and expressed its ongoing gratitude to the people of Crete, because during the Battle of Crete, Greeks and Australians sacrificed much and suffered terribly as they fought side by side in their defence of the island.

The commemoration event’s attendees included among others the Deputy Minister of National Defence, Mr. K. Spiliopoulos and the Ambassador of Australia Ms. Jenny Bloomfield.

The attendees were also given the opportunity to see the Australian War Memorial’s photographic exhibition, that includes photos from the Battle of Crete, while they were able to attend traditional cretan dance offered by the Cretan Institution.
