Greek-Australian Businessman Receives $200 Billion State Contract

He is of Greek descend and is considered to be the “king of pearls”. Nicholas Paspaley is the CEO of the Darwin-based Paspaley Pearls, the largest pearling company in Australia.

The Paspaley family also owns an aviation company with 21 airplanes, a fleet of 120 fishing boats and many real estates in Sydney, Darwin and NY.

Now, the head of the Paspaley pearling dynasty and Darwin property developer John Robinson have secured a $200 million taxpayer-funded contract to build a detention centre – without submitting a competitive tender, which has caused quite a headache for the Gillard government.

The new facility will be built at Wickham Point, which is about 35km from Darwin. The first of 1500 asylum seekers are expected to be moved to Wickham Point within a few months as the Gillard Government tries to take the pressure off an over-crowded detention network.
