Australian Cricket Club Awaits Greek Cricketer Spiros Goustis

The Sunshine Heights Cricket Club is looking forward to the 2011 / 2012 season with the arrival of Greek International cricketer Spiros Goustis adding a unique dimension to the season ahead.

Goustis learned cricket on one of Greece’s premier Islands, Corfu. He arrived in Melbourne on Monday, ready to fulfill a lifelong dream to play cricket in Australia.

Spiros hopes to enhance his cricket knowledge, both on and off the field, so he can help Greece advance its cricket back home. Greece competes in the ICC – European League and in Corfu they have been playing cricket for over 100 years as a result of the English influence on the island.

The SHCC prides itself on its inclusive outlook and continues to provide a pathway into cricket for those interested in the game and participating in a popular Australian pastime.

Club president Chris Hatzoglou says, “We are managing to make a positive contribution to social inclusion and the development of young people from all backgrounds, particularly culturally diverse backgrounds”.

Cricket is an effective vehicle that brings people together in a warm and friendly environment, where the community benefits” Hatzoglou said.

Club coach Matthew Shawcross stated “We have been developing an exciting young playing group from within our junior program over a number of seasons. We are confident that the hard work of many is about to bear fruit”. “I am encouraging our young players to believe in themselves, to back the natural ability that they so obviously have.”

Shawcross continued ‘We are a very strong bowling club. To play regular finals cricket, we need a more consistent output from our top-order batsmen – I want our club to develop a reputation throughout the competition as having the most difficult batsmen to dismiss.”

“Our recent success has taken years of hard work and the best years are ahead of us”. Many years have gone into nurturing our young players and the results starting to show”, Hatzoglou concluded.
