Anastasios Tami’s Book on Greeks in the Far East

Unknown information about the lives and activities of Greeks who settled in Far East countries at the end of the 19th century are being revealed through the pages of a new book by Professor Anastasios Tamis.

Professor  Tamis, who will be presenting his new book entitled “Greeks in the Far Orient” in Australia on the 4th of November, has uncovered the enlightening information with the help of his team of experts after a 5-year long research and after visiting 12 countries.

The book is comprised of 580 pages and present 480 rare photographs, evidence to the immigration wave that started from Greece and reached India, China, Manchuria, Japan, Korea and the Philippines.

According to the author, the first Greeks that settled in the above mentioned countries were refugees and expatriated Greeks, victims of social and economic circumstances from Russia, traders from the Balkans and Asia Minor, islanders from Greece, seamen and adventurers or members of large families.

The Greek academic refers to numerous examples of famous or unknown Greeks, who started their lives anew, based upon interviews, reports by clergy and consular staff, personal records of Greeks who lived there, country records, as well as national libraries and historical and diplomatic records of the time.

The research describes 3 general settling phases, which took place from 1878 until 2010 and follows the steps and immigration motives of almost 40.000 Greek and Cypriot immigrants.

Professor Spyros Vryonis, expert on Byzantine and Islamic studies (USA) is also participating in this publication, with the interface, which constitutes an evaluation of the book and also an epilogue, referring to his relatives from Cephalonia who had settled in North China and Manchuria.

The book is available in English, is translated in Greek and is expected to be available in Chinese.
