Peaceful Protest at Greek Consulate, Sydney

Scores of protesters gathered peacefully outside the Greek General Consulate in Sydney, on June 7th. The demonstrators were there to object to the sailing ban imposed by the Greek authorities, on ships with a Greek or foreign flag leaving Greek ports to travel to Gaza. The boats have been sitting in ports waiting to get permission to sail to Gaza to transfer desperately needed humanitarian aid.

The protest, organized by Gaza freedom Flotilla Australia was staged to persuade the Greek government to lift the ban and allow the boats to sail. Councillor Marika Kontellis, a Greek Australian stated that, “The Greek government must do what is right, what is lawful and in the best interest of human rights”.

Many of the protesters were holding placards written in Greek and English, urging  the government to release the boats and to show solidarity towards Palestine.
